Running Costs

The real cost of owning a car

The purchase price is just the opening line of what a car actually costs you over time.

It's tempting to judge whether a car is affordable purely by its asking price, but that figure is only the beginning. The true cost of ownership adds up across several categories, some obvious and some easy to overlook, and understanding them helps you budget realistically rather than being caught out later.

The costs you expect

Fuel, insurance, and tax are the costs most people already factor in, and they vary considerably depending on the car, how it's driven, and where you live. Insurance in particular can swing significantly based on your age, driving history, and the specific model, so it's worth getting a realistic quote before committing to a purchase rather than assuming a rough figure will hold.

The costs that catch people out

Servicing and MOT testing are recurring costs that some owners underestimate, particularly if a car has been neglected before they bought it and needs catching up on. Tyres wear out and need replacing at intervals that depend on driving style and road conditions. Depreciation is perhaps the least visible cost of all, since you don't hand over money for it directly, but it quietly reduces what the car is worth every year you own it.

Budgeting sensibly

  1. Get an insurance quote before you commit, not after
  2. Check your handbook or a dealer for typical service intervals
  3. Set aside a rough monthly amount for wear items like tyres and brakes
  4. Factor in likely depreciation if you plan to sell or part-exchange later

Setting aside a modest amount each month for these predictable but irregular costs, rather than treating them as unexpected shocks, makes car ownership far less stressful. A car that looks cheap to buy can turn out to be expensive to run, and vice versa, so it pays to look at the whole picture before deciding what you can genuinely afford.
