Detailing goes a step beyond a regular wash, aiming to bring paintwork, interior, and trim as close to their best condition as possible. It rewards patience over expensive products, and the fundamentals are the same whether you're working on a daily driver or something you take real pride in. Working in the shade, on a cool panel rather than direct sun, also makes a noticeable difference to the finish, since products dry and streak far faster on hot paintwork.
Washing without adding swirl marks
Most swirl marks come from washing technique, not dirty cloths alone. Use the "two-bucket method" — one bucket of clean soapy water, one of plain rinse water — so you're never dragging grit back over the paint with your wash mitt. Always work from the top of the car down, and use a separate mitt or cloth for lower panels and wheels, where the worst grime collects.
Drying and protecting the paint
- Dry with a large, soft microfibre towel rather than letting the car air dry, which often leaves water spots.
- Once dry, a coat of wax or a synthetic sealant adds a layer of protection against grime and UV exposure.
- Clean glass separately with a dedicated glass cleaner and a fresh, lint-free cloth.
- Treat exterior trim and tyres with an appropriate dressing to stop them fading or drying out.
Don't neglect the interior
Vacuum thoroughly first, including under the seats and in door pockets, before wiping down hard surfaces with a mild, appropriate cleaner — check it's safe for the specific material, since some interior finishes can be damaged by the wrong product. Fabric and leather each benefit from their own specific care products rather than an all-purpose spray, and it's worth testing any new product on a small, hidden area first before applying it more widely.
Detailing isn't about buying every product on the shelf; it's about doing each stage properly and in the right order. Start with a careful wash and dry, add protection, and build from there — the difference in finish over a standard car wash is usually obvious straight away, and a regular routine makes each subsequent session quicker and easier than the last.
