A road trip with children can be one of the best parts of a family holiday, or one of the longest days of the year, depending on how well it's planned. A bit of preparation before you set off makes a genuine difference to how smooth the journey feels.

Before you leave

Check car seats are fitted correctly and appropriate for each child's age and size, and confirm this before the day of travel rather than as you're about to leave. Plan your route with realistic stops in mind, roughly every couple of hours, rather than pushing straight through. Pack a bag within easy reach that has snacks, water, wipes and anything needed quickly, so you're not digging through the boot at a service station.

Keeping everyone entertained

Boredom is usually what turns a good journey into a difficult one. A mix of audiobooks, music, simple travel games and a few small surprises kept back for the journey can go a long way. Screens have their place on longer trips, but building in regular breaks to get out, stretch and run around tends to do more for everyone's mood than another episode of something.

Staying safe and comfortable

Take regular breaks, especially on hot days, and never leave children in the car alone even briefly. Keep the car well ventilated and be mindful of direct sun on car seats, as they can heat up quickly through glass. If travel sickness is a concern, sitting in the middle of the back seat facing forward, with a view out of the front, can help, along with fresh air and avoiding reading in the car.

Managing your own energy

Long drives are tiring for the driver too. Share driving where possible, take proper breaks rather than pushing on when tired, and build some slack into your schedule so a late start or extra stop doesn't turn into a stressful rush.

The best family road trips are rarely the ones that go exactly to plan. Build in flexibility, expect a few bumps along the way, and the journey itself can become as memorable as the destination.
